Correspondence, journals of European travel, and other personal and professional papers (1847-1873) relating to Steedman's naval career and his decision to stay with the Union forces, with detailed accounts of the bombardment of Fort Fisher (N.C.), operations in the Chesapeake Bay, and other Union naval operations. There is also information concerning Steedman's command of the U.S. naval forces in Panama during the 1870s and relations between Chile, Bolivia, and the U.S. during the 1880s. The early letters are by Steedman's father, John Steedman, and concern family affairs and economic conditions in Charleston, S.C. The travel journals include one kept by Steedmen's wife during a trip to Europe, 1878-1879. The later correspondence relates to Charles Steedmen's retirement.
